Two simple points
An annual will only last one season.
dianthus, pansies, nasturtiums are nice ones.
A perennial comes back each year.
lavender, phlox, ivy, and forget-me-nots are good choices.
if you plan to stay at your place for a while we suggest the latter. they grow stronger every year.
